So that you can keep selling on the safe side while your customers still pay flexibly, we have gathered the key information for you here.

  • Existing contracts: stay as they are.

  • Selling B2B: business customers are not affected.

Understand what changes

On 20 November 2026, the new EU Consumer Credit Directive (CCD2) takes effect. It is designed to better protect private customers from over-indebtedness and newly defines when an installment payment legally counts as credit. It applies to sales to private individuals in the EU.

  • 1

Installment payment after delivery will count as credit. Lenders face strict obligations: a credit check, pre-contractual information (SECCI) and an official authorisation.

  • 2

Breaches can lead to fines of up to €500,000 and an extended right of withdrawal.

  • 3

The good news: flexible payment stays possible, through alternatives and licensed partners such as Klarna. Offering installment payments on your own was risky anyway, because you deliver first and carry the default risk alone. Restructuring your offers is therefore worthwhile regardless of the law, since it protects you from payment defaults.
